Barbara Stauss, grew up in Switzerland, moved to Berlin to study Russian in 1988. Three years later she entered the Berlin School of Photography, concentrating on technical aspects of the profession. She worked for some years as a photographer before becoming picture editor with a Berlin photo agency. In 1996 Stauss was in the founder team of mare magazine, a sea-themed publication dedicated to classic photo reportage and the picture essay. She is picture director of the magazine and responsible for its photographic concept. The mare publishing house also produces one photo book annually, on assignment.
Apart from her work for mare, Stauss is picture editor of “cpn magazine”, launched in September 2008 and published quarterly by Canon for its professional users.
She also teaches at photo-editing seminars, and was a master for the 2006, 2007 and 2008 Joop Swart Masterclass by World Press Photo.
