This 10 week workshop will help you move from multimedia slideshows and videos to a next generation interactive story. The digital medium is in nature interactive, but most multimedia stories are still linear videos or slideshows where the viewer has little control or influence on the story. We will explore how you can break the classic linear narrative and put the user in control of navigating your story.
The participants will produce a first version of an interactive documentary based on an existing photographic project they will bring to the workshop. The project is preferably a multimedia slideshow/video but could also be a book or collection of photos. Knowledge of simple video editing and/or audio editing will be an advantage. We will go through the entire process from developing the concept and prototyping to finding the technical platform and building the story.
The first third of the workshop will be dedicated to theory and understanding the basic formats and possibilities of interactive narratives. In the next part the participants will build a prototype of their story using sketches and/or Apple Keynote. In the final part the prototype will be turned into an actual story by using relevant online tools like Storyplanet and YouTube. Each week we will meet online to review the current assignments. In addition to this we will do live video and chat sessions with industry leaders including Andrew De Vigal (New York Times Multimedia), Joe Lambert (Center for Digital Storytelling), Tracey Boyer (Innovate Interactivity) and Daniel Meadows (Cardiff University).
