Being a student and living in a dorm is somewhat a weird and shaky thing. You are not a child anymore, but you are still not an adult either. You live far from your hometown without parents for the first time in your life. You dream about the future with fear and hope, but without any guarantee that your dreams will come true. Your life goes in-between of anxiety and “unbearable lightness of being”. The students in the pictures are from the Ukranian dormitories.

Michael Regnier about this assignment I think it worked out very well and you are really capturing a time in every person's life when they are first moving away from their home, their city, their family, etc. That's a great idea for showing the subject of "youth". I think you capture the mood and the expectation of a lot of these people very well. I think if it were possible to see these people a little outside the dormitory - or maybe inside the dormitory but doing more things than just sitting - sleeping, reading, cooking, washing, etc - this would make the set even more interesting.
Yulia Serdyukova about this assignment I haven't shot these students on the street intentionally. I wanted to show them at the dorm that is their temporary home and reflects their inner state in a way... Shooting them outside and in different situation could be interesting, I agree with you completely. As to me, It's a matter of approach. Concerning the "static" character of the images, it also has a reason. While shooting, I've talked to them - so they were sitting or staying - trying to concentrate on the mood (and in some way to lead them to this mood), and thus has missed motion. Actually, before this assignment, I never talked to people I photograph - I only "spied" upon them :-) I see that it's my lack of experience to manage to combine these two activities - talking and shooting, translating something and perceiving- at one time . Thank you for showing me that. |
