Several thousands Meskhetian Turks live in Krasnodar region now. A lot of them want to go to the US to their relatives.
In the aftermath of the resettlement hundreds of people got refusal from the International Organization for Migration. Most of them sold out their houses and properties. People live in rental houses now. At the same time a lot of Meskhetian Turks from regions other than Krasnodar region and people who entered into fake marriages resettled in USA.
Michael Regnier about this assignment I think this is a fascinating subject - actually some other people have worked on similar stories of displacement and it's amazing to see how many different situations there are like this within the former Soviet Republics and in Russian Federation. The situation of the Meskhetian Turks is certainly not a situation which has been covered very much at all - and I like your choice of subject since some of the most interesting stories sometimes photographically can be just a small group of people, a few lives/life stories. I think you have shot this very interestingly... Some of the portraits work very well - like "Guldona Hasanova rent a house after sold out her own house and property" and "Woman holds her little daughter". Some of the other images are a little "abstract" in the sense that they don't really tell you that these people are "displaced"... The houses could belong to anybody - or farmer could be any kind of farmer, even a Russian farmer. I really like this subject so I wonder whether there is any way of showing that. |
